The Gymnote was a French electric submarine with a steel hull. It was the first submarine equipped with torpedoes. The Gymnote launched on 24 September 1888, and was 18 metres in length. The submarine was armed with two 355 millimetre torpedoes. The Gymnote was eventually scrapped in 1911 after the submarine ran aground in 1907 and was damaged by seawater in 1907.
